500ml Bottle of Double Maxim Premium Brown Ale 4.2% ABV
Reviewed: 4th Feb 2024
Double Maxim was a famous and incredibly well loved beer, when Vaux Brewery (Double Maxims then brewer) closed in 1999, Maxim Brewery was launched to save this fantastic beer.
I've always liked this beer, where I live we had a lot of pubs and clubs serving Newcastle Brown Ale in the 80's which was an amazing beer, it isn't such a good beer now, but is Double Maxim better than Newkie Brown!!
The bottle:
It's another beer bottle that isn't particularly interesting, but you do get a small sense of history and tradition with the design. It is however another bottle in clear that, lets hope this beer hasn't become skunked!
Appearance:
Deep brown with a hint of red, reminiscent of polished mahogany. A creamy off-white head adds to the inviting visuals.
Aroma:
A warm embrace of biscuity notes and nutty richness dominates. Hints of caramelised sugar and maybe even a touch of liquorice peek through, creating a complex and intriguing fragrance.
Taste:
The initial mouthful is smooth and creamy, coating the palate with a delightful sweetness. Notes of roasted malt and toasted bread emerge, mingling with the nutty character from the aroma. A subtle fruitiness, perhaps peach or plum, adds a touch of freshness. The finish is bittersweet, leaving a lingering warmth and a satisfying dryness.
Mouthfeel:
Medium-bodied and creamy, with a gentle carbonation that complements the smooth texture. It's neither light nor heavy, but strikes a perfect balance for sipping and savoring.
Overall:
Double Maxim is a classic brown ale done right. It's not an adventurous hop bomb, but a comforting and rich journey down memory lane, to a hint of how beers used to be. The balanced malt character, nutty notes, and subtle sweetness offer a satisfying drinking experience. While it might not be for everyone, it's sure to please fans of traditional brown ales and those seeking a well-crafted, historic brew.
If you're looking for a classic brown ale with a rich flavour profile and a touch of history, Double Maxim is worth a try. But if you crave intense hops and modern experimentation, this traditional brew might not be your cup of tea (or ale!).
Score: 7/10
Thanks for reading, enjoy your beers, cheers!
