The Yorkshire Terrier, now brewed by Black Sheep Brewery (after a series of takeovers), isn't your average pint. This 'Yorkshire Amber Ale' packs a surprising punch in a sessionable 4.2% ABV, making it a great choice for those seeking a flavourful sip without a heavyweight punch. So, let's dig in and see if this "Terrier" lives up to its name.
The bottle:
Nothing particularly interesting about the bottle with this one, it's obviously good to it coming in a brown bottle (hopefully no lightstruck hops here), and the artwork is very simple, we'll the picture is the name of the beer which is enough. Be interesting to see what happens to the the York Brewery logo now that it's owned by Black Sheep, I know they originally said that they wanted to beers to be brewed in York again at sometime to hopefully the brewery and name will stay in the long term.
So, lets get this beer poured.
Appearance:
Absolutely no surprises with this one, it pours with a clear, amber hue and a bright white head that settles quickly. No frills, just classic amber ale aesthetics, but that part of what we love about these beers.
Aroma:
A delightful mix of floral and citrus notes greets the nose. Think orange peel, grapefruit zest, and a touch of grassy hops. From the malt side, I do pick up hints of caramel and a very mild toastiness. Inviting and refreshing, like a spring garden in a glass.
Taste:
The initial sip is crisp and clean, with the floral and citrus hop character shining through. The malt backbone provides a subtle sweetness and caramel undertone, balancing the hops nicely. It's light-bodied and easy-drinking, but finishes with a satisfying dryness that keeps you coming back for more.
Mouthfeel:
We have a nice carbonation with this beer. It's light and effervescent, with a fine carbonation that adds to the refreshing nature of the beer. It dances on the palate without being overpowering.
Overall:
The Yorkshire Terrier is a delightful little brew that punches above its weight in flavour. It's sessionable and easy-drinking, making it perfect for casual gatherings or solo sessions. The citrusy hops and balanced malt character offer a satisfying taste without being complex or overwhelming.
While it might not be a showstopper, and in fact seem a little lachlustre and dull for some drinkers, it's a reliable and enjoyable beer that lives up to its "Yorkshire" name – small in size, but big on flavour.
I fell out of love with Golden/Amber ales for a while as they failed to excite me, but beers like this reignite the love I once felt for them.
So, if you're looking for a refreshing and flavourful English Amber Ale that's easy to drink, the Yorkshire Terrier is definitely worth a try. Just don't expect a full-blown "pint"-sized experience, this Terrier is all about small bites with big flavour.Score: 8.5/10
Thanks for reading, enjoy your beers, cheers!
