I haven't written much about individual breweries, and I think it's because there are so many great brewers out there, spotlighting a couple just didn't seem fair, BUT, reviewing beers for me is a hobby, but I always remember that for the brewers, it's a serious business, one that has seen many of them living on a knifes edge in recent years, so I think I do need to shine a spotlight on the breweries that I come across that are worthy of a mention.
Lost Cause Brewing Co. is one such brewer; craft beer has seen a surge in popularity over the past decade or so, with many breweries emerging to offer unique and diverse beer experiences (but also so many more falling by the wayside). Among them, Lost Cause Brewing Co. stands out not just for its exceptional brews but also for its dedication to the craft beer industry. The Story Behind Lost Cause Brewing Co.
To be honest there isn't much of a story as their first beer only came out in April 2024, but a husband and wife team with 40 years of experience in the industry was always going to start off well.
Colin Stronge has a long track record in the industry, including Head Brewer at Salt Beer Factory, but also stints at Buxton, Marble, Black Isle and Northern Monk. Vik isn't a stranger to the industry either as she has working in marketing and brand for the likes of Fourpure and Magic Rock.
Lost Cause Brewing Co. was founded by these passionate people with a mission to create beers that don't compromise on quality, and already looking to push the boundaries with new hops that really don't get used much in beers right now (I'm think of their terrific Love You, Bye - a Luminosa DDH IPA)
Craftsmanship and Innovation
At the heart of Lost Cause Brewing Co. is a commitment to creating beer with no compromise, using only the best ingredients, brewing techniques, and flavours to brew beers that are as big and flavourful as possible.
Each beer is meticulously crafted, using high-quality ingredients and traditional brewing methods combined with modern techniques. This fusion results in great flavours and styles really shine through.
Just a little note on the artwork, their cans really pop off a shelf, and they look inviting before you've even opened them, which is half the battle for retailers.
Signature Brews
A couple of months in and it's probably a little early to talk about signature beers or core ranges, but they have a decent stable to start things off with:
Lully: A simple citra IPA, I love these really simple beers, because the brewer has nowhere to hide, one off note and you'd taste it right away. Clean and refreshing.
My, Myself & I: A tropical pale ale this one. 5% but it drinks like something a little more.
Stone Cold: An interesting style this one, a Mango Sorbet, it drinks a little like a Milkshake IPA without that overdoing it on the lactose.
In The Club Style: You asked for a classic stout, and that's exactly what this is, no bells, buzzers and hooters, a stout how stouts should be.
Love You, Bye: My personal fave. A very well balanced DDH IPA, a perfect blend of bitterness and tropical fruit flavours. It's a refreshing choice for those who appreciate a well-rounded IPA.
Since When Are You An Eagle: Their first colab, this one with Moor Beer is a Westie, now I can get a bit particular about my Westies, but this hits the spot nicely, fruity, refreshing and bitter.
The Future of Lost Cause Brewing Co.
Who knows! As Lost Cause Brewing Co. continues to grow, I'm sure they'll remain focused on their core value of producing quality beers. Already they have a cracking distribution, they are in plenty of bottle shops and tap room all around the country, but this will grow reaching more beer enthusiasts.
I'd perhaps like them to focus on building on what they have done so far, focus on their core range, perhaps a couple of imperial beers wouldn't go a miss! But as any new brewer will tell you, you have to innovate and try different styles, so I am looking forward to whatever comes next.
