VOLL-DAMM (330ml) 7.2% ABV
Mrs Andy’s Beer Reviews and I recently took a well-earned break in Spain. It’s September, and to be honest, we hadn’t had a proper holiday in a few years. Life’s been busy, work, routines, all the usual stuff, so this trip felt like the perfect chance to unwind, switch off, and recharge.
I didn’t actually plan on doing any beer reviews while we were away. I figured I probably wouldn’t come across anything all that interesting... but wow, was I wrong.
The Beers Packaging
These cans look fantastic, finished in a deep, rich green with clean, well-organised text in a crisp, readable font. It has a premium feel to it, the kind of design that makes you think this is a high-end lager.
Surprisingly though, it only cost me €1 (around 86p), an absolute bargain! To put that into perspective, that’s about the same price I’d pay back home for a nameless, sub-par IPA in Home Bargains. Needless to say, I was really looking forward to cracking this one open.
The Beers Appearance
Voll-Damm pours a crystal-clear, bright dark gold, topped with a tight, compact white head that holds up well. The fine carbonation catches the light beautifully, giving it a clean, classy look, definitely the kind of pour that hints at quality.
It’s a hot, muggy Spanish day, and this has been chilling nicely in the fridge... so yes, it looks incredibly inviting right now!
The Beers Aroma
This one caught me by surprise, the aroma is much fruitier than expected. There’s a definite citrus note, but also a clear hit of stone fruit (think ripe peach) adding a juicy layer to the nose.
Of course, the malts make their presence known too, with that familiar sweet, bready aroma that gives it warmth and depth.
Interestingly, after a few sips, I also started picking up a herbal note in the aroma, which adds a nice balance to the sweeter elements. It’s a complex and inviting aroma that sets the stage well.
The Beers Flavour
The flavour definately leans into bold malt character: toasty and caramel-forward, with just a touch of residual sweetness that gives it depth without becoming cloying. There’s a subtle earthiness in the background, along with faint tannic note, I guess think tea and you'll know what I'm tasting here.
A hint of herbal hop bitterness rounds it out nicely, keeping things balanced and drinkable.
What’s most surprising is how light and easy-drinking it feels, especially considering the 7.2% ABV. That said, there’s no hiding the strength entirely, you know you're drinking a stronger beer, but it never tips into being harsh or boozy. It’s bold, flavourful, and well-crafted.
Overall Impression
Voll-Damm really impressed me. From the moment I saw the classy, deep green can, I had a good feeling about it, and it absolutely delivered. The pour is clean and inviting, the aroma is far more complex than I expected, and the flavour backs it all up with rich malt, subtle fruit, a lovely herbal note, and just enough bitterness to keep things balanced.
Despite its 7.2% ABV, it drinks surprisingly smoothly, with a creamy texture and a refreshing finish that’s perfect for sipping in the Spanish heat. And at just €1 (86p) for a 330ml can, it’s almost ridiculous how good the value is.
I didn’t come to Spain expecting to find beers worth writing about, but Voll-Damm proved me wrong in the best possible way. A big, bold lager that’s easy to enjoy and well worth seeking out.
My Rating
I don't think its the fact that I'm drinking a cold malty lager in the Spanish sun. I truly this that this is a very tasty lager. Rating 8 out of 10.
